Laura Hooper Calligraphy Workshop

There's just something about receiving a piece of mail that has been written in calligraphy. Am I right? Most people don't realize the amount of time, work and talent it takes to address just one envelope. So I always make sure and save whatever it is. Whether it's a card, invitation or note.

I've always had an appreciation for those who have perfected this art. Yes, it is an art! There are so many fonts and forms of it to learn, and every letter is just as gorgeous as the overall finished product! I admire anyone who knows calligraphy, especially after taking my first class this past Saturday. I can definitely say... it's not as easy as it looks, ha!

I finally crossed one off my bucket list and signed up for a calligraphy workshop with the amazing Laura Hooper. I'm sure you've seen her work at some point. Laura has been featured in anything and everything. From Martha Stewart to the Today Show!

I first found out about Laura from Instagram. I've followed her for awhile and y'all should too. Her work is seriously stunning and she does all sorts of calligraphy. Everything from wedding invites, to wood cutouts, napkins and more! Also be sure to checkout her Etsy shop here! I've purchased many things from her over the past year.

So when I found out Laura was teaching a workshop here in DC, I jumped at the chance to attend!

Laura hosted a small class, about 12 of us, at the Karson Butler Events studio right here on Capitol Hill. It was a three hour workshop for beginners. Since the class size was small, we really got hands on attention. Laura walked around most of the time, helping us find the best way to hold the pen, amount of pressure to use, teaching us tricks, etc.

Let's just say, I didn't pick up the craft as easily as some did, ha! But I really enjoyed it. I should note though that Laura has been practicing the art since she was 12. So it's not a skill that is learned overnight.

I highly recommend taking one of Laura's calligraphy workshops. She has several more coming up this fall!! Her class is well worth the money! Not only do you learn from one of the best, but you get to keep all the supplies you use in the class too! She even had the cutest tote bags for us to carry it all home in.

While it'll be quite sometime before any of you receive an envelope written by me in calligraphy, I will say that this is a skill I'm excited to continue practicing. I've got the basics down now thanks to Laura!

Have you taken a calligraphy class before? Let me know what you thought in the comments below!

So cool, Kristyn! I took one with someone else earlier this year and it's so challenging but so fulfilling. I definitely need to practice, though–let's have a calligraphy afternoon with wine! :)

I want to take her class, but she hasn't been in Boston in a while!

Yeah, she's very limited to the bigger cities this fall it seems. I know there are some openings in New York City. Maybe she'll do another class there this spring!
