Holiday Gift Guide: For Him

Gift Guide for Him

Today's post is the first of several "holiday gift guides" that will be featured on the blog over the next week or so. As we gear up for Black Friday sales and Cyber Monday, it's good to go ahead and get an idea of what's out there... to be thinking about the types of gifts you're going to give this holiday season. Today is all about gifts for him. Whether that is your father, brother, husband or best friend, you'll find a little bit of everything in this gift guide.

When it comes to finding the perfect gift for him, there is never one perfect option. For me, finding the right gift for my father or brother (still working on the beau part), is about practicality. Things they'll really use and items that'll stay in trend for years to come. So for this year's gift guide for him I decided to feature just that. Everything from brand name companies, to homegrown startups.

To highlight two companies featured above, Bull & Moose // Stubble and 'Stache, both are DC based companies who donate part of their proceeds to organizations that support our troops and veterans. If you're an avid follower of the blog, you know how much I LOVE businesses that give back. Pick up a velvet bow tie for your beau's New Years attire (proudly sponsors Got Your Six) or purchase a beard care kit from Stubble and 'Stache for your father (a portion of sales goes to help our wounded warriors).

Some of my other favorite gifts for him are sunglasses, practical items like collar stays or cufflinks, and watches. Does your man have a problem with arriving to that date on time? Or is your brother always the last to show up to a family function? Shinola, based out of Detroit, offers genuine leather watches that are def on trend. Not sure what your "him's" style is? Than a great subscription service is the Trunk Club. Think Stitch Fix, but for men. A personal stylist hand chooses items for him, sending them straight to his home to try on. No shopping, no stores, free shipping. If your him is more of a traveler, the perfect "manly" tote bag can be found in Waiting on Martha's shop. For an added Southern touch, get the thing monogrammed.

Looking for some great gifts on the cheaper side? You can still get them some great staple items like button downs, house slippers or colorful socks from Nice Laundry (George H.W. Bush would be proud). All of the items featured in this year's Gift Guide for Him are perfect for any type of man, at every age.

P.S. -- Want to win some extra cash just in time for the holiday shopping frenzy next week? Then don't forget to enter the Black Friday Giveaway going on (ends 11/25). You could even put the $50 towards one of the items featured in today's post, just saying.

Over the Weekend, Edgy Preppy

Over the Weekend the temps in Washington, D.C. drastically dropped. So long fall, it was nice knowing you. With the cooler temps, it means finding the perfect "going out" outfit can be challenging. For me, staying warm is the most important. Nobody has time for skimpy dresses and stilettos when it's 20 degrees outside. I would say my style is super preppy, most of the time, but I love to mix it up a bit. The leather pants add a fun edge to my outfit and are perfect for a night on the town. To keep in line with my preppy side, I threw on a J.Crew puffer vest (as an added bonus it keeps me warm in lieu of a jacket or heavy coat). I found the PERFECT catch all blouse from Ann Taylor. I've worn it to work, brunch, to run errands and out. Even better? It's 40% off right now!

For me, dressing in the winter in DC is about staying true to my style, keeping warm, but making sure I look chic while doing it. When it comes to my wardrobe as well, I love versatility. All of the pieces in this outfit can be mixed and matched for any occasion.

Setting the Table for Thanksgiving

When it comes to setting the table for Thanksgiving dinner, my family has never been extremely formal with our decor. I mean we're lucky if we can even get the men off the couch and away from watching football. So it's usually all the women at the table, men cheering on their team in the living area and the dogs trying to sneak whatever crumbs they can. While this may be nontraditional for some, it's exactly what makes Thanksgiving Day perfect to me. As I get older though I have more of an appreciation for the decor and effort that goes into setting the Thanksgiving table, and not just the amazing food that goes on it. Since I am currently apartment style living and do not have a table (we have a bar top area, so don't think I'm living out of a shoe), I will have to keep these amazing Pinterest inspirations in my back pocket. For this year's table, I've noticed that gold accents and deep, rich color schemes are in... like lavish purples, darker oranges and oxblood red. So I pulled a few of my favorite Pinterest finds, that'll hopefully inspire your traditional tablescape.

A gorgeous tablescape from Apartment 34. I love how they went with an unusual color scheme for their table setting. The dark purple tones, mixed with copper, green and black finishes, really set this table apart. I also like their mix and match approach to dinnerware pieces. The various plates do not match, but are coordinated enough in a way that they work well together.

When it comes to the centerpiece, I am OBSESSED with using pumpkins. Now I'm not talking just throw a pumpkin down on the table and call it a day. No ma'am! There are many ways you can utilize this simple fall novelty. Spray paint your pumpkins gold, use the pumpkin as a flower pot, or add mini pumpkins to a planter or use as garnish along your table runner.

The burlap trend will never go out of style as far as I'm concerned. However, there are ways to make it look amazing (like above) or ways that it can be super tacky. I love to use burlap because it's extremely inexpensive and there are numerous ways to utilize it. I really like how Yellow Bliss Road doubled up her tablecloths and used a burlap overlay, above. You could use the overlay approach for just about any table setting.

Finally the place cards. While you would think most families wouldn't need these for their seating arrangement, a lot would disagree. Place cards are a great way to ensure your creepy Uncle Fred doesn't sit next to you, or those feuding children sit at far ends of the table. See, place cards can have a purpose, ha! All three of the ideas above are simple, yet offer a great touch to your table decor.

Looking for last minute pieces to spice up your table? Some of my favorite go-to places for home decor are HomeGoods, Pier 1, TJMaxx, Crate&Barrel, Target or Marshalls. Since most of these stores are drastically marking down their prices to make room for all the Christmas decor, you're in luck! You can snag some pretty great deals and steals right now. Hey, sometimes shopping for a holiday last minute can really pay off!

Two more weeks till we feast!

What to Wear on Thanksgiving

Poncho (sold out, similar) // Striped Tee (H&M old, another great option) // Jeans // Flats // Purse (H&M in stores, online similar) // Sunnies // Watch (old, similar) // Belt (borrowed, similar option) // Necklace (c/o)
Photos by Meaghan of District Sparkle

When it comes to finding the perfect Thanksgiving outfit, I tend to go for comfort and cozy. My family usually spends the holiday at home, watching football and chowing down on some good home cooking. With such an informal setting, my outfit of choice is usually jeans and an oversized sweater. It's the perfect combo for a day of relaxation, family time and scrumptious food. I found this Forever 21 poncho and paired it with a simple striped tee. To dress it up a bit, I added a gold bow belt and J.Crew flats. I love the versatility of this poncho. You can wear it flowy and open as how it's intended, or belt it back for more of a fitted sweater look. Either way, it'll be the perfect attire for Thanksgiving Day.

Over the Weekend, MetroCooking DC Show

Over the Weekend I attended one of my favorite events here in DC, the Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show. Last year I went with my friend Alex and we had an absolute blast. From watching the cooking demonstrations, to meeting Food Network chefs, to hanging out in the grand tasting pavilion and nomming on some scrumptious DC food. I just couldn't wait to get back to this year's event. I also heard that two of my fav chefs, Guy Fieri and Bobby Flay, would be in attendance. So that bit of info in itself was reason enough to go back.

I went to the Saturday session, so unfortunately no grand tasting pavilion for me this year. It was bittersweet though, because last year I chowed down on WAYYY too much food. Didn't feel so hot afterwards, so this year I was more than happy to look and not touch. I walked around the showroom floor, checking out which booths came back for another year and scoping out all the new businesses. One of my favorites was a MetroCooking Show returnee, Dress It Up Dressing. I just LOVE their champagne dressing and really enjoyed trying out their new blackberry flavor. If you live in the DMV area, you can find Dress It Up Dressing at your local Whole Foods market.

After a walk-through of the booths, I headed over to the workshop area to meet up with a fellow blogger and friend, Brittney from Hosting & Toasting. Brittney was hosting (pun intended) a holiday workshop and how-to on proper host gifts for holiday parties. One of her number one rules is "to never show up empty handed to a party." I for one totally agree with her on that. She shared some of her favorite go-to gifts like homemade cookie jars, candles and how to properly gift alcoholic beverages. I loved hearing her tips and Brittney's workshop really put me in the holiday spirit. Can it just be December already?!

The Metropolitan Cooking & Entertaining Show comes to DC each year, but you can also find it in Houston and Dallas. More shows will be added soon, but I highly recommend if you're in any of these areas to checkout an upcoming show

Blanket Scarves

Blanket Scarves

Top Row: one // two // three // four -- Middle Row: one // two // three -- Bottom Row: one // two // three

Many of you texted, commented and Facebook chatted me, asking where I got my blanket scarf in last week's Insta post. Well ask, and you shall receive! While the ever popular Zara option that started the blanket scarf madness is sold out EVERYWHERE, there are many similar options out there. There's also plenty of new designs and patterns to get your blanket scarf fix (what up American Eagle). Whether you love them or hate them, blanket scarves are here to stay till spring. So you might as well get on board. They're the perfect accessory to keep you warm during the Polar Vortex this winter. Wear them around your neck, throw them over your lap, wrap your little nugget puppy up in the them... whatever you fancy. I featured a few of my fave options above!

Over the Weekend, Supper Club

One of the hardest things about juggling a full-time job, full-time blog and all the activities associated with both, is finding time to catch up with friends and finding a night that is convenient for everyone. We all live extremely hectic lives, between work and other activities, that it can be hard to nail down a night for us to all meet. That's when a good friend of mine, Laura, mentioned that we should start a supper club. Choose one night a month where we all will do our best to save that date on our calendars so we can get together for an evening of food, fun and friend time! I've heard of other groups of friends who do something similar, whether that be a night out on the town, wine night or a monthly happy hour. We decided to do potluck dinners the first Sunday of every month, each taking turns hosting supper club at our homes or apartments. The hosts will choose a theme and provide the main dish, while the guests will each bring a side dish, drink or dessert to contribute. We had our first supper club last night and it was an absolute blast. I loved getting to see everyone, enjoy some delicious flank steak and sides, but most of all I loved that everyone was able to attend (especially Laura's dog, Nellie)!

I cannot wait till next month's supper club. My roommate Liz and I will be hosting everyone at our apartment for a Christmas themed supper club. Are you apart of a supper club? If not, it's so easy to start your own. Just grab a group of friends, decide on the dates for each month, create an email chain or google doc to determine what everyone is bringing, and then meet up for a fun girls night! It's super easy and a great way to keep in touch throughout our busy and hectic schedules.

Happy Monday y'all. Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
