A Week of Healthy, with Megan of Simple Savvy Self

If you're an avid reader of the blog you probably know that I've been on this real "health" kick lately. For several months now I have felt extremely sluggish and just down right unhealthy. Things finally came to a head a few weeks ago when I couldn't even concentrate at work and all I wanted to do was curl up under my desk and sleep. That's when I realized I had a problem… no, I'm not narcoleptic but I needed to tackle this issue head on cause it wasn't going to get any better.

Conveniently enough, that same week I attended a workshop and that is where I met health coach, Megan Quinn of Simple.Savvy.Self. We sat next to each other at the workshop and began talking about what we did and she mentioned that she was a certified health coach. I began to talk with her about how I had been feeling, and she explained to me that it was completely normal. When you go from living an extremely active lifestyle in college, to sitting at a desk all week in the real world, it's only natural for you to go through the whole "I'm in a rut" phase. You have to adjust your lifestyle and eating habits.

So I thought to myself, I definitely can't be the only twenty something going through this. I am sure there are plenty of you out there who have experienced the same thing I have, or will in the future. So I asked Megan if she'd offer up some tips for me to implement in my life, as well as share with all you lovely people! All this week Megan will be guest posting, sharing with y'all her tips and tricks for getting back on the path of feeling happier and healthier. 

For today's post, Megan focuses on tips for staying hydrated. Something that is extremely important for sustaining energy throughout the day.

Drink up!  And I’m not talking happy hour…

WATER. It’s important!  I know, I know...you’ve heard it all before and you think you’re already drinking enough, but, the reality is, you’re probably not.  Here’s the deal: Drinking enough water is one of the most important things you can do for your body today and every day.  Drinking water is critical to keeping your metabolism and weight in check.

GAME CHANGER:  Drinking water. First thing. In the morning.
I use to barely give myself enough time to shower and blow dry my hair in the morning before heading (running) out the door to work so, naturally, even stepping foot in my kitchen was totally out of the question.  Once I got to the office, I’d plow through my morning, grande coffee in hand, and I wouldn’t even think about drinking anything else until lunchtime rolled around. Then, I would grab a bottle of water with my salad.  SEE!  I drink water.  

Does this sound familiar?  What most of us don’t realize is we wake up dehydrated.  We just slept for 7-8 hours.  Then, we go another several hours before taking a sip of water?  No wonder we’re constantly feeling low energy and fighting cravings throughout the day, despite doing our best to eat healthy.  When I began making drinking water a priority first thing in the morning, I started to notice I relied less on caffeine to get me through my day,  I had less frequent headaches in the afternoon, and my sweet tooth wasn’t quite so sweet.

Your Challenge for Tomorrow:  Drink a glass (or 2) of water as soon as you wake up.  For an added BONUS: Try a glass of lukewarm water with fresh lemon and cayenne pepper.  Lemon is a natural detoxifier, packed with antioxidants, and the cayenne pepper aids in digestion and helps regulate blood sugar.

This small #simplesavvy adjustment to your morning routine can make a world of difference.

    Never would I have thought of adding cayenne pepper to a glass of water but I suppose it's worth a shot!
